About Stephanie Spires
I moved to Lexington in 1999 to attend the University of Kentucky. I fell in love with the Horse Capital of the World, and decided to make Lexington my home. The last 12 years in Lexington have given me great memories, including my marriage to my husband, John, the beginning of our family, the opening of my business, and now my campaign for the LFUCG 3rd District City Council seat.
John is an attorney with Dinsmore & Shohl, LLP and is a native of Lexington. In our spare time, we love reading, traveling, taking in a movie together at the Kentucky Theatre, and attending UK sporting events. Though we do not yet have any biological children, we have had the privilege to serve as foster parents for a number of amazing children.
When not spending time with my family, I own and operate Limelight Promotions, LLC, a boutique event management, communications, and fundraising consulting firm in downtown Lexington. I founded Limelight Promotions, LLC because I wanted to help nonprofit organizations and other small businesses across the Bluegrass design and implement successful communication and fundraising campaigns. I have found that many such organizations have brilliant ideas, but often lack the means to implement those ideas – my goal is to help them make their ideas into realities, an approach I hope to bring to the LFUCG.
In 2009, my husband and I purchased a 100-year-old home in need of some TLC on North Ashland Avenue. Although I would not consider John or myself too handy, we fell in love with the neighborhood and decided we were up for the challenges of home renovation.
In my spare time, I work with several local organizations. Currently I serve as a trustee for the Lexington Public Library, as a trustee for the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, as secretary of the board of the Bluegrass Tennis Association, as an Elder at Second Presbyterian Church, as a member of the Lexington Rotary, as a member of the Junior League of Lexington, as a member of the LFUCG Commission on Youth Development and Public Safety, as a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and as an active member of the Mentelle Neighborhood Association. Additionally, I was honored and humbled to recently be named a 2011 Rising Star by the Lexington Young Professionals Association.
Two of my favorite hobbies are cooking and tennis, and I have been blessed to share both of those interests with the community. On the second Friday of each month, through Second Presbyterian Church, I organize and often serve dinners myself at the Ronald McDonald House for the families of children receiving medical treatment in Lexington. I am also the head of Second’s Fellowship Committee, which is responsible for organizing luncheons and special events for the congregation. I have taught tennis through the Police Activities League and YMCA of Central Kentucky, and co-founded the Ribbons & Racquets Tennis Tournament, which has raised over $50,000 for breast cancer patient services at UK’s Markey Cancer Center.
